Obituary



Kathleen Ann Smith, 66, passed away on December 15, 2013 at Peachtree Christian Hospice, in Duluth, GA. She was born on July 18, 1947, in Wichita, KS, to Verne, Sr. and Hazel Smith.

​Kathy grew up in Tulsa, OK, where she graduated from Edison High School in 1965. Kathy attended college at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK, where she received a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She also earned three Masters Degrees: Masters of Science in Nursing, Masters of Science in Adult Occupational Education, and Family Nurse Practitioner, from The University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, and Emory University respectively.

 During her career, Kathy taught nursing at Tulsa Junior College for 15 years, at Kennesaw State University for 13 years, and University of North Georgia for 10 years, where she retired in 2009.

​She also worked as a childbirth educator for Northside Hospital for many years in the 1990s and 2000s. She served a term as the Georgia Representative for the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and taught the NCLEX-RN Review Course to prepare students for licensure as nurses for many years in Georgia and Texas. Kathy dedicated her career to nursing education, women’s health and the advancement of the nursing profession.

​ Kathy married Raymond “Ray” Duncan in 2000 in Big Canoe, GA. They were happily married for 13 years. Kathy was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society, and Big Canoe Chapel. She enjoyed hiking, walking, gardening, traveling, sailing and boating on Lake Petit, and spending time with her large extended family. She was an avid Oklahoma Sooners fan. Kathy’s closest friends described her as a joyful, courageous, energetic, charismatic, big hearted, caring, outgoing, vivacious, true, and trustworthy. Kathy always viewed life as an adventure, and was a wonderful mother and friend.

 Kathy was preceded in death by her father, Verne Smith, Sr., her mother, Hazel Conyers Smith, and her daughter, Paige Pruett Butler.

​ Kathy is survived by her husband, Raymond Duncan, of Big Canoe, GA; her daughter, Ashley (Kay) Pruett, of Decatur, GA; her son-in-law, Jeff Butler, of Marietta, GA; her grandsons, Jackson Ryan Butler and Grayson Reid Butler, of Marietta, GA; her brother, Verne (Diana) Smith, of Grand Junction, CO; her sister, Connie (George) Robb, of Peoria, AZ; her brother, Steve (Ann) Smith, of Tulsa, OK; her stepfather, Paul Muratet, of Tulsa, OK; her stepchildren, Paige (Greg) Sharpe (Bailey, Katelyn, and Zachary), of Cumming, GA, and Philip (Windy) Duncan (Taylor), of Alpharetta, GA.

 A memorial service will be planned and held in the Big Canoe Chapel in Big Canoe, GA on January 11, 2014 at 11:00 AM. A family memorial service will also be held in Marion, KS, in late spring 2014. In honor of Kathleen and her favorite color, we ask that everyone wear something red to her memorial services to honor her.
